The Gummy Dummy.

  • This is a three-part disaster, so buckle up.

Some of my disasters aren’t really that heartbreaking, like the time I melted plastic wrap all over my bowl of rising dough.  Oooooh.  Although annoying, I was somehow able to carry on.
But this one- sorry, these three disasters- these hurt.

Allow me to set the stage: my lovely niece was turning five, and Auntie Jodi, who lives far, far away, wanted to send her some gummy bears in the mail to help say “Happy Birthday!  Celebrate with sugar!”.  I ordered adorable gummy bear molds from Amazon two months in advance.  I was so excited.  I might have been more excited to make the bears than my niece would have been to eat them, but I can’t tell because the gummy bears died before I could wrap them up in a cute little box and send them.  (Dead bears usually aren’t hits at five year old birthday parties, even with nice wrapping paper, from what I’m told.)

    Disaster 1: The Technique.

    • Apparently gummy candy isn’t supposed to be spread with a spatula after pouring it into the molds, like how you do with chocolate.  (See photo below.)  Okay, not a problem.  I made more.  (Not a problem until Disaster 3 reared its ugly head.)Mistake Gummy Candy

    Disaster 2: The Dishwasher.

    • Apparently plastic gummy bear molds aren’t supposed to go in the dishwasher.  (See photo below.)  Okay, still not a problem.  I had a slew of good-looking, healthy-looking bears to send, so I was unflappable.  The gummy bears- they just couldn’t flap me.Mistake Gummy Candy Mold Melt

    Disaster 3: The Recipe.

    • Apparently my recipe sucked.  The acceptable gummies I was all set to box up the next day were not so much gummy in texture, but more like rigor mortis.  Again, dead, stiff bears for a birthday niece- not so much a recipe for Aunt of the Year Award.  This time I had a problem- I was going to tweak the recipe, but oh yeah- I couldn’t.  See Disaster 2 above.  The bears flapped me.

So in the end I had nothing to send my niece.  Like I said, a triple disaster.

I’ll perfect the recipe one day.  And my niece will be twenty three by that point and so not into gummy bears anymore.
