The Double Disaster.

  • Mistake- Broken Chocolatey Banana Loaf

I have been known to make mistakes.  I bake a lot, so I rationalize that I’m allowed to come up with a few disasters every now and then (like every month, on average.  So if I bake two things a week, I’m disasterizing 12.5% of my recipes.  Hm.  That sounds expensive, considering that the ingredients in my mistakes come from Whole Foods and King Arthur Flour.).  I have the disaster thing down pat, which is humbling and character-building, especially for a perfectionist.

What’s not cool is when you create two disasters from one recipe.  I don’t need to be made more humble, and I don’t need to build more character at this point, but thanks.

Disaster #1:  Broken Bread (see hideous picture above).

    • Situation:  I was worried that I had over-baked the delectable Chocolatey Banana Bread, so in a moment of ill-fated wisdom I thought “I’ll take the bread out of the loaf pan right away, so that it stops baking in its little 350° loaf pan”.  Usually (always) one has to wait at least 15 minutes for a cake or bread or whatever to cool in its pan before removing it, so it sets and decides to remain a single unit of dessert.
    • Cause:  impatience.
    • Lesson learned:  stop being impatient.  And watch the countdown timer closer.  (I inadvertently stopped the timer on the oven, saw 12:37 and thought that there were 12 minutes and 37 seconds left on the timer.  It was actually 12:37 in the afternoon and I realized my mistake more than 12 minutes and 37 seconds later.)

Disaster #2:  Mini-Muffin Mistake (see hideous picture below).

    • Situation:  I stole some of the Chocolatey Banana Bread batter to make mini muffins, which proceeded to overflow their muffin compartments and bleed into one another.  And stick to the top of the mini muffin tin because of course.
    • Cause:  sheer and utter ignorance.  I guess I filled the muffin tins too high, and I guess I didn’t realize that the recipe was really more like a cake batter.
    • Lesson learned:  learn to look into the future better and know how a batter is going to behave.

    Mistake- Overflowing Muffin Tins

(I plan to use the mini-muffin carcasses in some kind of trifle situation.  For now the remains are tucked away in the freezer, waiting for their time to shine.  I’ll keep you posted.)
