Strawberry Hemp Seed Smoothie

  • Strawberry Smoothie

I know, I KNOW.  It’s so not summer anymore.  You might be asking, why make an icy dessert when it’s six weeks away until the streets of Chicago are like smoothies themselves?

If that’s your attitude, then you need to chill the freak out.  Yeah, snow and slush are coming.  That’s a good point.  But why not create the feeling of summer indoors, in your glass, with or without alcohol to dull the edges of seasonal change disorder?  (I made up that whole SCD thing, but it might actually have legs.)

Oh, and in case you didn’t notice in the title of this post… hemp seed.  Yeah, so this little ditty reeks of health, which will offset the splash of vodka you might be inclined to include in your blender.  I’m not telling if the version I made had it or not.  Whatever.  Fall’s here.  Time to hibernate and gain a few pounds.  :)

    15 strawberries, hulled and washed

    1 banana

1/2 cup almond milk (or whatever milk you like)

1 cup greek yogurt (or whatever yogurt you like)

1 tablespoon hemp seeds (finely ground)

    1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

tiny pinch of salt (yes, really)

Small or large splash of vodka (totally and incredibly optional)

    7-8 ice cubes

1/2 cup whipping cream & 1 tablespoon confectioners’ sugar (optional, for garnish)

    1. Throw all ingredients into blender or food processor, and blend until smooth.
    2. If making whipped cream garnish, beat cream on high with the sugar until stiff peaks form.  Spoon over smoothies.
    3. That’s it.

    Tips:

    • Like more fruit?  Add more!  Throw in blueberries, blackberries (ew), raspberries, whatever you like.  Just add more milk/yogurt/ice to get the consistency you’d like.
    • On a healthy diet?  Skip the whipped cream and use low fat milk & yogurt.  Done.
    • Stop complaining about winter coming.  You can create a summer state of mind even in the depths of a freeze.  Make a grilled shrimp salad, look at pictures of your favorite Caribbean vacation (not the one where you barfed on the beach), and drink a summery drink.
    • Enjoy!
