Golden Graham Pie

  • Golden Graham Pie

What’s that, you say?  Could this really be a pie made with Golden Grahams, the cereal known and loved by sugar-crazed kids across the North American continent?

I’ve got one word for you, and it’s the right one:

    Yes.

I bought a box of the cereal last summer (for the express purpose of baking them into something evil and sinful), and after two months of being taunted by it every time he opened the cupboard, The Husband broke down and ripped the box open and ate them all up.  (He happens to love GGs- maybe it harks back to his childhood when he tried them [illicitly?], loved them [of course], then wasn’t allowed to get them because they were probably [absolutely] not as healthy as oatmeal and probably [definitely] not as cheap as puffed rice.  What an abusive childhood, to be deprived of Golden Grahams.*)  So I have wholeheartedly enabled his inner sugar addiction, and even though he eats boring and healthy cereals as an adult, he still gets excited by a box of trash in the pantry.  (My apologies to General Mills.  Golden Grahams are so obviously not trash, or else I wouldn’t be baking them up as a pseudo gift to The Husband.)

So this time I bought the box and baked this pie the very minute I came home.  And the good news is that this dessert is so easy that I don’t even know if I can call it a recipe- it’s that wonderfully trivial.  And as we all know (like with the Classic Shortbread Cookie), simple is beautiful and elegant.  And downright taste-tastic.

Adapted from my Magic Gooey Cookie Bar recipe…

1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs (not the cereal… actual crumbs from graham crackers)

    1/2 cup melted butter

    1 can sweetened condensed milk

    2 cups Golden Grahams cereal

    3/4 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

    1. Preheat oven to 350º and grease a deep dish pie plate.
    2. In a medium bowl, melt butter in microwave and then stir in graham cracker crumbs; press evenly into bottom and up sides of greased pan and pour can of condensed milk on top.
    3. Sprinkle Golden Grahams cereal and chocolate chips across top of pie, gently pressing into condensed milk to help adhere.
    4. Bake for 25 minutes (until lightly browned), and cool on wire rack.  Chill in fridge before slicing, and serve at room temperature.

    Tips:

    • Want as bars instead of a pie?  Spread into a 9 x 9 inch pan instead.  You’re the boss.
    • Get creative:  this pie is happy to get crazy.  Take your favorite chocolate bar and cut it up into bite sized pieces, and toss on top of the condensed milk along with the cereal and chips.  Or add in what you’d like… marshmallows, nuts, dried fruit, berries.  (OMG- berries- imagine blueberries?)
    • Switch the cereal.  Imagine this with Cocoa Puffs?  Or Fruit Loops?  Options are endless.
    • *Re: the whole “abusive childhood” thing… The Husband came from an impossibly amazing family.  (Seriously- I love the MIL and FIL [Mother-in-Law, Father-in-Law], and so does he.)  No abuse has ever been uttered or documented as a part of his childhood.  (Although he didn’t get to eat hot dog buns with his hot dogs.  They used bread slices.  Questionable.)
    • Enjoy!
