Nutella Fudge Brownies

  • Nutella Fudge Brownies

    Nutella.

Nutella swirled into The World’s Greatest Fudge Brownie.  (And a bit of Frangelico to amplify the hazelnut flavor.)

    Sold yet?

I haven’t been to Eataly yet here in Chicago (Mario Batali’s food-filled haven)- shame on me, I know- so I have yet to see their glorious Nutella Bar… but The Husband went a couple of weeks ago and caught a glimpse of it.  He’s recently gotten himself hooked on Nutella again (I know, I’m married to a tween) so was transfixed with the myriad possibilities of the European spread.  This brownie is in honor of his rekindled romance with the chocolate and hazelnut concoction.  The picture looks like crap, but the brownies were among the most memorable that I’ve served in a while, just so you know.
Adapted from my World’s Greatest Fudge Brownie recipe…

    4 ounces chopped unsweetened chocolate

(the better the chocolate, the better the brownie)

    3/4 cup unsalted butter

    2 cups sugar

    1 tablespoon Frangelico (optional)

2 1/2 teaspoons real vanilla (use the real stuff)

    3 lightly beaten eggs

    1 cup flour

    1 1/2 teaspoons salt

Optional: 1 tablespoon instant espresso powder

Optional: 1 cup lightly toasted hazelnuts, chopped

    3/4 cup Nutella spread

    1. Preheat oven to 350° and grease a 9 x 9 foil-lined pan.
    2. Melt chocolate & butter in microwave for 2:15 minutes and stir.
    3. Stir in sugar, then Frangelico, then vanilla, then eggs, then salt, espresso powder (optional) & flour.
    4. Stir in hazelnuts if you so desire.
    5. Pour into prepared pan and drop heaping tablespoon-sized amounts of Nutella over surface of brownie batter.  Using a sharp paring knife, swirl Nutella into batter to help distribute.
    6. Bake for 33 – 36 minutes (until center is just set).
    7. Cool & cut into squares.
    8. Indulge.

     Tips:

    • Check out the original post for brownie tips.
    • Chocolate chips?  Oh yes- add them if you’re on the verge of debating it.
    • When swirling the Nutella, remember that you’re swirling- not stirring :)
    • More hazelnut?  Try the Hazelnut Fudge Brownies… not with Nutella, but still has the flavor profile.  (And maybe the Chocolate Hazelnut Torte while you’re at it…)
    • Of course these freeze well.
    • Enjoy!
