Mistake-o de Mayo.

  • These brownies don’t look that horrific in this picture, do they?  Trust me, they are.

“The are quite possibly the worst brownies you’ve ever made”, said The Husband after trying my new Cinco de Mayo Brownie, fresh from the oven.  (I don’t know why he had to specify ‘brownies’, as though there’s a “Worst of” list for all of the types of things I bake, but anyway.)

I think he’s right, and I think I know why.

It’s not because the brownies were made with cinnamon, cayenne pepper and chili powder (bold, yes, but very Mexican as intended)… it’s because I made them with Stevia.

Stevia is a calorie-free natural sweetener, and I was stupid to think it could replace sugar in my otherwise PDG World’s Best Fudge Brownie recipe.  I now have a huge bag full of the freaking stuff and I don’t want to try it (and fail) again.  What a waste of butter and chocolate… and now I don’t have a “not terribly unhealthy” dessert to bring for Mil this weekend (a.k.a. Mother in Law).

    Stevia sucks.

(On a brighter side note, if you’re still interested in a Cinco de Mayo Brownie that doesn’t suck, go ahead and add 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1/2 a teaspoon of both cayenne pepper and chili powder when adding the flour to the World’s Best Fudge Brownie recipe.  Just don’t replace the sugar with you know what.)
